Willkommen in Berlin!

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design student Vanessa Lee reports. On the 4 February 2008, a group made up of 32 Art and Design Degree and Foundation Diploma in Art and Design students and five staff took a week long trip to Berlin, to explore the sights and visit some of its best known galleries. We stayed at the Generator Hostel, ‘Europe’s funkiest hostel’, and travelled everywhere by foot or train, so a good map came in handy! We spent our days visiting various galleries and monuments, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie, Norman Foster’s Reichstag Dome, and Checkpoint Charlie, exploring the shops and surrounding areas. And as for the evenings, we discovered little restaurants offering various cuisines, cocktails bars, gigs, or even just the entertainment put together by the hostel itself. All in all, everyone had a great time and enjoyed different aspects, coming home shouting ‘Berlin Baby’!! Course Team Leader for Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Lee Birkett adds, “We decided to take students to Berlin,

because of its fascinating past, as well as being a hub of contemporary culture and art. All in all, we felt the city would be a great inspiration for students’ own creative work when back in their respective studios. All students had to produce a sketchbook of work whilst on the visit, documenting all of their personal interactions and memories of Berlin. For some this sketchbook was used to inform project work when they returned to college.”

Lines from the Library

Last week I was very pleased to accept a bookcase, (on behalf of the Library), made by Jordan Honeyfield, a 14-16 year old student, on the Kingsland campus. Excellent job Jordan, well done and thanks! I shall be sending this to the Leighton Buzzard Learning Warehouse for the reception area. Over the Easter Break we hope to fill the bookcase with fiction books for you to come back to.

Move It Dance Exhibtion

Maureen Asher organized a HE trip for the Performing Arts students to the “Move It” dance exhibition at Olympia in West London. This event was the biggest dance exhibition in the UK and it brought together every dance style over the three days of the event. The event featured 100 spectacular performances, there were opportunities to participate in 160 dance classes and to also learn about the dance at a series of in-depth seminars. There were also 150 exhibitors offering the latest dance information, advice and products.

The Performing Arts students enjoyed the day and they experienced a wide range of dance styles from bollywood to ballroom, jazz to street and ballet to salsa.

New Courses at Learning Warehouse Leighton Buzzard

The Learning Warehouse in Leighton Buzzard is now enrolling for courses starting in September 2008.

Also available are part-time courses which will be available for September 2008. More details coming soon.

Learning Warehouse Leighton Buzzard Salon

The salon is open on Tuesday and Friday from 9.30 am until 3.00 pm. A skin test must be carried out 48 hours before a colour treatment. On the 17th May we will be hosting an indulgence day between 10.00 am and 4.00pm where all proceeds will go to the Keech Cottage Charity.

This term the outstanding student is Jessica Rolt and the runner up is Shane Barton. So well done guys!!!
